People always ask me if I have a degree in Business. The answer is no, I dropped out of a Sports and Exercise Science degree when I was 17 years old. I completed a couple of subject of my communications degree but was only really there for the public speaking course.
Sitting still and learning in a traditional classroom was never really my thing. I don’t believe in the concept of memorising answers for a pressure test in order to graduate with huge debt, a piece of paper and no real world experience.
I do however have a strong love for reading books and for 5 years now, I have thrown myself into learning everything I possible can about business, mindset, health and performance from the best of the best in the game. Here are the 10 books and lessons I learnt from them that helped me to define my business and make it what it is today.
Think and Grow Rich by Napelon Hill
This book was the reason I started my business. The quote ‘whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve’ snapped me out of my victim mentality about being in a shitty job and prompted me to take action on designing my the life of my dreams.
Losing My Virginity by Richard Branson
This book taught me that anything is possible if you’re crazy enough to give it a good crack and that confidence is key.
The Desire Map by Danielle Laporte
This book taught me that ‘what you focus on expands.’ For the first time in my life I sat down and came up with how I wanted my life to make me feel and started owning my desires for freedom, wealth and abundant happiness.
4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss
Tim taught me that nothing is urgent, things can wait and the importance of streamlining and automating my business. It has saved me plenty of hours and money over the years.
Overcoming Under-Earning by Barbara Stanny
I learnt self worth, how to price myself properly and begun the process of letting go of limiting beliefs around money.
How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
First published in 1936 and is still relevant to today’s business world and life in general. I learnt the art of pitching (which landed me a deal to get my magazine stocked in the Virgin Australia Lounges) and negotiating deals. A must read for an entrepreneur who deals with people - everyone!
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
Recommended by a magazine interviewee when asked ‘how did you get 100K+ Instagram followers?’ A great read for anyone who wants to attract a tribe, gain a huge following or start a trend with their product/service.
Secrets of a Millionaire Mind by T.Harv Eker
This book made me comfortable with money and taught me the art of using my subconscious mind to attract opportunities and money into my business.
Serena by Serena Williams
Serena taught me that hard work and absolute focus on the end goal is where success comes from. She was visualising winning tennis Grand Slams at age 6 whilst playing handball on the sidewalk of the streets of Compton, California.
Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself
Meditation is the true key to success. Hustle will only get you so far, tapping into the power of your subconscious mind and visualising your success is what will move mountains for you in your business and life goals.
