Charlie Hand is bringing back the art of leather making with hand stitched good quality leather goods for humans and wolves. Created in Manly, Australia's Wolf Pack Leather is gaining momentum as people shun the mass produced products and search for quality, long lasting leather with a customised difference. We chatted to Charlie about the passion of leather making and how she decided to create a business out of manufacturing dog and human accessories.
How did the idea form to create a business?
I was searching for some good quality leather collars for my dogs and couldn’t find anything remotely similar to what I was picturing. I was frustrated at how many collars had either broken or rusted out within a year.
It was a long time of thinking before I woke up one morning and decided that today I would make one. After the first I was hooked on the feeling of accomplishing what I put my mind to and the idea extended to leather goods for people.
Did you have previous experience leather making?
I remember having a love for leather from a young age. In grade ten at school my major project in Design & Technology was a little leather shoulder bag with sterling silver.
You have a fantastic marketing aesthetic and social media page. What is your approach to social media?
Good quality photos are the key, as well as using great quality leather. I have chosen to use 35mm film mainly as I feel it portrays the real quality & colour of my materials. I’ve also realised people prefer to see photos of my leather goods being put to use instead of a flat lay shot with minimal background.
Why did you want to run your own business as opposed to working for a large company?
The satisfaction I get from completely crafting something with my hands from start to finish is so rewarding that I decided why not create a business that continuously makes me feel this good.
In the past I’ve always been passionate at working my hardest as an employee but I prefer having complete control of my own business, it’s very satisfying and completely allows self-expression. My focus is to shift people’s mentality to purchase handmade items using traditional materials that last, instead of supporting consumerism that is creating a toxic earth.
Biggest business achievement so far?
I feel every product that I make is an achievement. When I see someone with one of my wallets or a dog wearing a Wolf Pack dog collar I’m over the moon!
What plans do you have for Wolf Pack Leather in 2016?
