Just start. The art of surrender and trust in business and in life

It is pointless trying to know where the way leads. Think only about your first step, the rest will come.

-Shams Tabrizi

I’ve been reflecting lately on the true art of surrender in life and in business.

So often we can get stuck in the mind, so badly needing to figure it all out that we lose sight of trusting the process of life itself.

I’m not going to lie, I am a big believer in the hustle, getting it done and making shit happen. But what I’ve come to learn is that there is only so much ‘work’ you can do before you have to completely let go and know that everything is happening perfectly.

Some of the biggest wins I have had in business have come from places beyond my mind. People, businesses, and opportunities that presented themselves to me beyond my wildest dreams.

One profound moment for me was when I was about 6 months into StartUp Creative. I had let go of my full-time contract to freelance to the company for two days a week over a period of five months as I figured out a way to make StartUp Creative a profitable and viable business.

It was coming up to Christmas time and I realised that I wouldn’t be getting any paid holiday leave, that a lot of businesses shut down for almost 6 weeks in Australia and certainly no one was spending money on business coaching, workshops or events.

How was I going to keep money flowing in to pay the bills, buy presents and fund that Byron Bay getaway I had planned?

I remember sitting down and running the numbers. Figuring out how much I would need to live for the holiday period, how much I would need to make before the end of year wind down began and where I was going to find those clients/jobs/opportunities.

There was a mixed bag of feels. Some anxiety, stress, overwhelm, dread, looking on seek.com considering a coffee shop job and plenty of fear. But in amongst all of the chaos I had a belief that backing myself fully would lead to great opportunities and I wasn’t prepared to sell out, settle or allow fear to distract me from the end goal. I trusted that something would come.

Whilst I was still hustling to grow the business with daily meetings, being consistent on Instagram and pitching like a crazy woman I was also very diligent in silencing the voice of fear and self-doubt in me and replacing it with trust and self-belief.

About a week later I received an email from a university that had received funding for a new program that they wanted writing by the end of the year – the budget was $15,000 and they wanted me to do the work.

Four years on and there have been countless times in the process of starting, running and building StartUp Creative that has been scary AF. Where I question what the hell I am doing and even days when I can’t seem to open an email or even get out of bed.

But here’s what I now know.

Those days will come, so know that. But also know that they are not the full truth of your existence and what you are becoming. Allow the fear, doubt, self-sabotage, stress and overwhelm to exist, there is no point in trying to suppress it. Flow with it, sit with it and learn from it. Allow it to break you and in the breaking open – learn from it.

What did you miss or not see for this to have happened?

How have you been taking care of yourself?

How have you allowed this on some level?

What is the dominant voice in your head telling you?

Who are you surrounding yourself with?

Are you on purpose?

Do you love what you do?

Are you prepared to never give up?

Will you forget safety and live in the wild unknown mystery of life as a process?

Take some time today to let go.

Forget the lists, the goals, the new direction.

Trust, be, flow, live, exist, be human, love, enjoy, play and surrender.

Knowing that everything is happening perfectly and what you seek is also seeking you.
