How to set and achieve your 2023 goals

Research shows that a person is more likely to take action on a goal that they have freely set themselves and feel that they have full autonomy over. The intensity to which they will strive towards those goals is based on desirability (how attractive or necessary they feel the goal is) and feasibility (how capable they consider themselves to be able to achieve the goal and with how much ease) they perceive their goals to be and how aligned they are to their personal values.

Goal setting this time of year can be anxiety provoking for many and we'll often overestimate what we think we can achieve. This can result in negative side effects such as low self esteem, fear and overwhelm when things don’t go to plan.By being intentional with your goal setting this time of year and ensuring they are the right fit for YOU and only you, based on your desires and capabilities, you can help to reduce comparison , negative self talk and imposter syndrome throughout the year.So in order to set yourself up for a year of inspired action, motivation and consistent momentum towards your goals in 2023, let's first run them through a few checklists to make sure they are  aligned to your personal values, desires and your capabilities.

Your Goal:

Desirability

  • What are the outcomes or results for attainting this goal?

  • How will striving towards this goal affect the way you see yourself?

  • How will striving towards this goal affect the way others see you?

  • Does this goal help you to progress towards a a higher goal?

  • What external rewards will you attain for taking action towards this goal?

  • What internal rewards will you attain for taking action towards this goal?

  • What level of joy will this goal bring you?

  • What level of pain is associated with moving towards this goal?

Feasibility

  • How would you rate your capability to take action towards this goal? (e.g low, moderate, high)

  • What skills, knowledge and experience do you already have to help you take action towards this goal?

  • What skills, knowledge, experience do you expect to be lacking that would prevent you from taking action towards this goal?

  • Do you believe you have what it takes to bring this goal to life?

  • What is the likelihood of you taking action to achieve your desired outcome?

  • Do you feel confident that you can overcome challenges and solve problems that may get in the way of you achieving your goal?

Reflection- Does this goal align with my personal values of who I want to be and how I want to spend my time this year?- Are there any adjustments or edits to your goals that you need to make?- What practical next steps can you take to increase their desirability and feasibility in order to set you up for achieving your goals this year?

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

― James Clear

Remember that goal setting is a powerful way to focus your efforts and get clear on how you will spend your time. Without them a lot of people will wander aimlessly with a frustration that they're not getting anywhere and eventually they will give up on trying.Goals give us direction and a way to measure our progress, but without the awareness of why you are setting them and how to do it correctly we may end up chasing someone else's goals and setting ourselves up for failure.
