4 Simple Steps to Goal Attainment

Goals represent the possibility of a desired future state.

We need to first dream of that new reality for ourselves and secondly believe in our ability to travel towards and eventually arrive at our desired destination. When we combine a clear vision of the future with the self-belief, we are more motivated to take the necessary actions to set out on the journey.

The more appealing our goals, the stronger our commitment is to work towards them.

Because our goals are likely an experience, achievement or outcome that we haven’t yet experienced in our life, they require planning. Just like we research, study and plan a holiday to a location we haven’t yet travelled to, we need to allocate ample time to a figure out a plan that will ensure our successful arrival.

4 Simple Steps for Goal Attainment

  • Dream it—take some time consider what it is that you want for the next year of your life. You might like to write this out in your journal, make a mood board of images or talk about it with someone close to you. Consider all the aspects of your life (health, business, finances, relationships etc), what you value most and who you want to become. How would you like your life to look and feel this time next year? Give yourself permission to dream big, think outside of the box and in a childlike way, without limiting yourself with the practical application just yet.

  • Believe it—visualise yourself in a future reality where your goals have been actualised. Close your eyes and see if you can walk yourself through a day in the life of that new version of yourself, how do you feel, where are you, who are you with and what are you doing? I recorded a guided reflection to help you get in the zone if you find it hard to do it solo, it’ll take you less than 20 mins.

  • Plan it—grab a pen and paper and write out 3-4 specific goals that you have for yourself. Give them as much detail as possible e.g start a graphic design freelance business that replaces my full time job. Now that you know what you want to achieve, we can start making the plan to get you there. List out the steps required to achieve this goal. At first they might not be in order, it could be a brain dump that you can rearrange later. e.g make a logo, build a website, get a paying client, earn X amount of money.

  • Make time for it—this is, in my opinion the number one difference between those who will achieve their goals and those who will forget they even set them; time. You can have the grandest vision, the best laid plans and the strongest desire to get there but without the allocated time to work on the plan, you’ll end up procrastinating and everything else will take priority. Look at your list of things to do to in order to actualise your goals, now review your weekly schedule and figure out when you’re going to work on them. This may require you cutting things from your schedule, getting up earlier or working when no one else is but if you’ve made your goals appealing enough and you’ve supercharged your vision with the feeling and desire for that future state, than your drive should override your distractions.

Enjoy the process and let me know how you go.
