Why your New Year’s goal setting starts now

For many of us we’re just over the hump of the chaotic holiday season of gatherings, gifts and gas bagging. This next few days brings a welcome break to slow down, switch off and self reflect.

As our minds begin to declutter, the space is cleared to review the year that’s been and start casting our visions to the future. We allow ourselves to dream of what possibilities could lie ahead in the approaching new calendar year.

It’s no surprise that the 1st of January in any given year holds a special kind of energy that resonates with new beginnings. Be it change, a new habit, a goal or an idea, “New Years” has a way of supercharging our intentions, inspiring a new dreaming for our future selves.

The problem is that the day comes and goes in a flash and while we may use the countdown to midnight to reflect back and dream forward, the visions themselves are not enough to ensure the fulfilment of our desires.

‘A goal without a plan is just a wish.’

So here are two tips to start bringing your goals to life today:

  • Emotionally commit— I started saying some of my new years goals out loud to myself and those around over the last few weeks. I love the energy the new year brings but I know as well as anyone that just because I write the goals down, it doesn’t mean they’re going to just happen. A goal that you emotionally attach to and start to visualise yourself in starts to embed itself into your subconscious mind, as if it’s already happened. Better yet, the subconscious mind starts to find ways to bring about that goal because it believes that it’s an experience it’s already had. Emotionally committing to the future makes it stick beyond the flash inspiration high of NYE/Day. We’re five days out from NYE, the perfect time to start setting your intentions and visualising what the new life you’ll be stepping into as the clock strikes 12pm. See it, believe it, be it.

  • Focus on what you’re gaining—for me personally, I hate the feeling of missing out, it sparks lack and sacristy in me and I want to avoid it at all costs. I put it down to the 10 years of being a long distance runner in a strict training routine that often meant I missed out on social occasions, spontaneous fun adventures and a carefree diet as a young person. So for me, goal setting that feels like ‘I can’t do something’ or am having it taken away makes me rebel pretty quickly. This year I’m framing my goals through the lens of what I’ll be gaining. Already I’m excited to be ‘free’ of certain bad habits that I’m ready to let go of. The trick is to think about the feeling, emotion or end goal you’ll ultimately be gaining from letting go of that habit. e.g letting go of sleeping with my phone in the room and starting my day with scrolling = a clear and focused morning routine that inspires me to write first thing in the morning and opens opportunities in my business.
